We are River People: Stories of Migratory Fish
Celebrate World Fish Migration Day with Us! Every two years, World Fish Migration Day brings together thousands of people across the globe to celebrate our shared connection to migratory fish and the free‑flowing rivers that sustain them. This year’s theme — We Are River People! — reminds us that rivers shape our lives in countless ways: through the kai we gather, the places we swim, paddle, and fish, and the memories we carry from growing up alongside flowing water.
As part of this global celebration, we’re hosting a special Speakers Evening to uplift local stories and shine a light on the dedicated mahi happening across Taranaki and Aotearoa to protect our migratory species.
Join us for an inspiring evening with four incredible speakers;
Patu Harakeke Hapū, presenting their meaningful mahi using traditional knowledge of weaving and the revitalisation of taura wai māori ((Māori connection to freshwater) to support fish passage remediation.
Kaimahi Tatai ki te wai from Te Kāhui o Taranaki, sharing their powerful īnanga mahi and the kaupapa behind protecting this taonga species.
Freshwater scientists from TRC, giving insights into the regional council’s work in fish passage and the efforts underway to restore movement pathways for our native species.
Each speaker will share for around 20 minutes, followed by time for pātai and kōrero — a chance to connect, learn, and celebrate together.
Come be part of this global movement, honour our rivers, and celebrate the people working every day to protect the species that depend on them. We can’t wait to see you there.
