Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment “BIOR” is a public research institute with a derived public person`s legal status and supervised by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Latvia. The Institute is a research centre of national importance which develops innovative research methods and creates new practically applicable knowledge in the following areas of science: public and environmental health, food safety, fishery and veterinary medicine. The scope of activities: research and knowledge transfer; surveillance of animal infectious diseases and realization of livestock health programs; services in animal disease diagnostics, food and environmental testing; training of laboratory experts, inspectors, veterinarians and other specialists; maintenance and research of fish resources. Institute’s Fish Resource Research Department and its predecessors (Fishing Laboratory, Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography, Baltic Fisheries Research Institute, Latvian Fisheries Research Institute, Latvian Fish Resource Agency) have long history on the research of Baltic Sea starting from 1920s. Nowadays Institute “BIOR” is an active member of ICES, EFARO, HELCOM, STECF. Institute is responsible for the scientifically sound recommendations for the implementation of national fisheries policy.
