Each spring around 1/2 million river herring migrate from the Atlantic Ocean up the Mystic River to spawn. If lined up back-to-back, this would measure up to 100 miles of fish! The Herring Run & Paddle celebrates this incredible migration and ecological success story happening at in our local river. We invite community members to join us for a 5k run and/or a 3-mile, 9-mile, or 12-mile paddling race along the Mystic River to follow the river herring’s route.

Named for the ship commissioned by Governor Winthrop in the 1600’s, Blessing of the Bay Park and Boathouse is one of the few waterfront parks in Somerville and the location of our annual Herring Run and Paddle Race.
