Riparian Forest for Fish, Rivers and People
We have developed niche specific ecorestoration protocol and benchmark ecological information of the riparian forest in the Western Ghats. The rain-fed Western Ghats mountainous landscape enriched with unique ecosystems, endemic flora and fauna of which the small rivers and endemic fishes contributes significantly. The narrow stretches of riparian forest makes the landscape more complex and were assessed as unique and threatened ecosystem recently. The rivers have been managed only targeting dam waters for electricity and irrigation, also very recently for flood control. We foresee the need of river management for freshwater, fish migration and sustainable management of riverine resources. Understanding and restoring the dynamic riparian forest can be a guide to address the issue and the migrating fishes can be a symbol of freedom. We try to bring the scientific understanding of river and riparian restoration, do’s and dont’s, simple protocol and various practices in the Webinar. Experience and status of rivers and riparian zones across the region will be presented there targeting more concrete and collaborative documents including guidelines and policy briefs. Expect representative groups in various river basins.
