The Upper Columbia United Tribes, including the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, Spokane Tribe of Indians, Coeur d’Alene Tribe of Indians, Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, and Kalispel Tribe are working to reintroduce anadromous salmon to the blocked area of the Upper Columbia River in the United States.  Researchers with the Tribes and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory plan to implant acoustic tracking devices in juvenile sockeye salmon, release them into the blocked area, and study their downstream, ocean-directed migrations to determine fishway needs to improve fish migration around Grand Coulee and Chief Joseph dams.
